Well the easy answer to this is NO!
Look at the person you are watching, are they a qualified professional? Have they spent time doing courses about skin and treatments?
When you come into clinic and see a skincare specialist we have spent time and money on understanding skin. I am not saying all “Beauty Therapists” here are equal as they are not. But a professional who has invested their time and money into education and treatments to help skin issues will be able to advise you on what is potentially happening with your skin and suggest products or treatments that may be able to help the situation.
My niece came to stay during the Summer holidays, she loves the fact her Auntie is a skin specialist and can’t wait to have treatments with me. She tells me that she has Fungal Acne on her forehead….. “see here on TikTok” she says, and promptly shows me a video that tells her to use…… WAIT FOR IT…… Head and Shoulders shampoo on her face.
The look on my face said it all, “I tried it” she said “my spots did get better”.
So I go into lecture mode, the reason your spots may have cleared up a bit is that the ingredients in the Head and Shoulders has stripped your skin of oil. Which will be temporary but guess what your skin is then going to produce more oil as you have stripped the barrier. Which will in turn lead to probably more congestion and spots. You need to WLL; Watch, Laugh, Leave I said. She does not have Fungal Acne and she missed one vital point they kept on about in the video that the skin would be super itchy but she had diagnosed herself.
The reality is youngsters are being influenced by people who have lots of views on Instagram and TikTok, they are then getting pressure off their friends, these under 18’s are on full skin regimes, which is completely unnecessary and can actually cause more problems for their young skins. They do not need to be using AHA’s, BHA’s and Retinol at that age. Their skins’ are not designed to have these products used regularly, when I see new clients who are either young or older I always introduce things slowly, these ingredients can cause reactions and issues if not used correctly. And skins that are turning over cells every 28 days do not need ingredients to help this process speed up. So my advice is don’t believe everything you see on TikTok, certainly don’t try everything you see on there (WLL). If you want some proper advice then come and see a skin specialist, but if your skin is good then all you need is a gentle cleanser, maybe a light moisturiser and some SPF protection to keep the skin in tip top condition, until you get older.
